Lung chemotherapy involves drugs that are contaminated to cancer cells. These drugs are given by direct injection in to a vein or with the help of a catheter placed in a vein. Chemotherapy also may slow the growth of tumor and helps to get rid of symptoms in patients in patient who can not have surgery.

There are two types of lung cancer that have different microscopic forms;

The first type of lung cancer is small cell lung cancer; chemotherapy is the main treatment for this type of cancer. It is a good attempt to stop or to slow the cancer beyond the lungs. Even if the cancer can not be removed completely, but chemotherapy or radiation therapy may succeed in making the patient more comfortable.

The second type of lung cancer is non- small cell lung cancer; for this type of lung cancer chemotherapy is added after the surgery to cure patient with any tumor spread to the lymph nodes or to treat large tumors that remain after surgery.

Chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy has extended life and improved survival rates for patients with not curable lung cancer, as it is compared with radiotherapy alone.
